Teaching languages together: Petra von Olschowski, Matthias Herrmann, Rainer Franke and Alexander W. Roos

VESPA represents a university language course cooperation program which was founded in early 2012 in Stuttgart by “Hochschule der Medien“ (HdM), “Hochschule für Technik Stuttgart“ (HFT), “Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste“ (ABK), and “Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst“.

The VESPA program allows all four participating universities to optimize their structure, content and processes in the field of language teaching. The gradual establishment of uniform quality standards serves as a guarantee for the quality of language teaching.

By facilitating structures in the field of language learning VESPA supports universities in their international orientation.

Programs are comprised of joint language courses. Prior to the beginning of language studies students have to undergo an online-based classification test. After successful participation transcripts of records and credits will be awarded to ECTS standards (European Credit Transfer System). Further support is provided by the establishment of joint e-learning environments and appropriate teacher training. In addition, the shared VESPA internet platform provides general information and practical guidelines for quality assurance in the area of university language teaching.

Students, professors and staff from all participating universities can thus use not only offers of their own institutions, but also those of the their partner institutions.

All language learning opportunities are based on the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages". The aim is to provide courses in 8 languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, French, Russian) reaching from A1 to B2 level and German lessons from A1 to C2 for international students.

Further cooperation partners are welcome. The program coordination lies with ”Hochschule der Medien” (HdM), the contact person is Mrs. Dr. Barbara Garzia-Jansen.
